Julian Adoff

Julian is a PhD student in Art History at the University of Illinois Chicago, specialising in Central and Eastern European studies. He is interested in rigorous modes of thinking associated with art-historical methodologies that often prioritise Western European perspectives. His research focuses on artists born in the Habsburg Monarchy and their role in shaping national identity in the 19th and 20th centuries, drawing on critical theory, Jewish studies, and the history of graphic design.

His research has been supported by the Fulbright-Hays DDRA and the UIC Provost Graduate Research Award. Julian was the first dual-degree student to graduate in 2019 from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, where he earned a Master’s degree in Critical and Visual Studies. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from Linfield College in May 2016.
